MORE FUNDAMENTALS
From mindmasher.com
- Balance the frequency spectrum, that is use all of the audible sound spectrum to create as full (or as empty) as a sound you are looking for.
- Do not be afraid to gut out instruments (using an equalizer to remove overlapping frequency ranges) so that they play nice with each other - don’t think of it as watering down, think of it as allowing other instruments to shine.
- Pan your instruments from the very start (and plan out the overall sound stage), and do it intelligently: don’t pan all of your bassy sounds left for instance, and even try varying the panning across notes on the same instrument
- Vary velocity on the instruments: both in relation to one another, and from chord to chord and note to note.
